Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-1574) was a pivotal figure in the history of Florence and Tuscany, known for his influential role in politics, culture, and the arts. Born on June 12, 1519, in Florence, Cosimo was the son of Giovanni delle Bande Nere, a renowned condottiero, and Maria Salviati, a member of the prominent Medici family. After the assassination of Alessandro de' Medici in 1537, Cosimo, at the young age of 17, was chosen to lead Florence, marking the beginning of a transformative era for the city and the surrounding region.

Cosimo's rule was marked by significant political and territorial consolidation. In 1537, he became the Duke of Florence and later, in 1569, was granted the title of Grand Duke of Tuscany by Pope Pius V, solidifying his authority. He strategically married Eleanor of Toledo in 1539, which strengthened his political alliances and brought considerable wealth and influence to his reign. Cosimo's military campaigns expanded the territory of Tuscany, incorporating regions such as Siena after the Battle of Marciano in 1554.

A patron of the arts and sciences, Cosimo I de' Medici played a crucial role in the cultural renaissance of Florence. He founded the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in 1563, providing a platform for artists like Giorgio Vasari and Agnolo Bronzino. His support for the sciences was equally notable; in 1543, under his patronage, Luca Ghini established the world's first university botanical garden in Pisa, known as Orto Botanico di Pisa, to advance the study of medicinal plants and botanical research. Cosimo also founded the Uffizi Gallery in 1560, initially intended as administrative offices, which eventually became one of the most famous art museums in the world.

Cosimo's impact on architecture and urban planning was profound. He commissioned the construction of numerous buildings, including the Palazzo Pitti, which became the primary residence of the Medici family. He also initiated the development of the Vasari Corridor, a passageway connecting the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti, designed by Giorgio Vasari, which allowed secure and private travel between the two locations.

Cosimo I de' Medici passed away on April 21, 1574, in Florence, leaving behind a legacy that profoundly shaped the region's political, cultural, and scientific landscape. His contributions to the arts, architecture, and the advancement of scientific knowledge solidified his reputation as a pivotal Renaissance ruler whose influence extended far beyond his lifetime.

Andrea Cesalpino (1519-1603) was a renowned Italian physician, philosopher, and botanist who made significant contributions to the fields of botany and medicine. Born on June 6, 1519, in Arezzo, Italy, Cesalpino studied under the guidance of the prominent botanist Luca Ghini at the University of Pisa, where he later became a professor of medicine and botany.

Cesalpino's work in botany was groundbreaking. He is best known for his systematic approach to plant classification, which he detailed in his seminal work "De Plantis Libri XVI" published in 1583. This work is considered one of the first attempts to classify plants based on their structural characteristics rather than their medicinal uses, laying the groundwork for modern taxonomy. Cesalpino's method of organizing plants by their fruit and seed structures influenced future botanists, including Carl Linnaeus.

His De Plantis Libri XVI, written in 16 parts and completed in 1583, was the 1st meaningful textbook on botany, and did much to establish this subject as an independent science. In this work he described and classified more than 1,500 plants, using a system of classification based on flowers, fruits and seeds rather than on location or medicinal properties. In this format he anticipated the system of binomial nomenclature later introduced by the 18C Swedish botanist Carolus Linnaeus in 1735. Cesalpino failed to grasp the fact that plants are sexual, and there were some errors in his classification, but nonetheless his research greatly assisted the study and development of botany.

Cesalpino also served as the director of the botanical garden at the University of Pisa, succeeding his mentor Luca Ghini. Under his leadership, the garden continued to thrive as a center for botanical research and education. In 1592, Cesalpino was appointed to a prestigious position as a professor of medicine at the University of Rome La Sapienza, where he continued his scientific investigations and teachings.

Andrea Cesalpino passed away on February 23, 1603, in Rome, Italy. His contributions to botany and medicine left a lasting impact on the scientific community, earning him recognition as one of the pioneers of plant taxonomy and an important figure in the history of medicine.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Pisa, known as Orto Botanico di Pisa, was established in 1543 by Luca Ghini (1490-1556), a renowned physician and botanist. Ghini, who held significant academic positions, founded the garden under the patronage of Cosimo I de' Medici (1519-1574), the Duke of Florence. The University of Pisa, located in the historic city of Pisa, Italy, became home to this pioneering botanical garden, which is considered the first university botanical garden in the world.


Luca Ghini envisioned the garden as a place for cultivating medicinal plants and teaching medical students. It served as a living laboratory where students could study botany and pharmacology firsthand. The focus was primarily on the practical uses of plants in medicine, but it also provided a space for the academic exploration of plant taxonomy and ecology.

Early botanical gardens usually were associated with universities and served as educational tools for teaching medical students and budding scientists about medicinal plants. They provided living specimens for research and encouraged the hands-on learning of old and new plant properties and uses.

These botanical gardens were crucial for the development of botany as a science for medicine. Research on both well-known plants & the foreign enabled the study and classification of plants, contributing to the creation of systematic botanical & medical knowledge. Notable botanists such as Luca Ghini, Francesco Bonafede, and Carolus Clusius made significant contributions through their work in these gardens.

The Age of Exploration (and Economic Exploitation) brought many new plants to Europe from the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Botanical gardens became repositories for these newly acquired exotic species, allowing botanists to study and classify them. This influx of new plants expanded European vision of horticulture and agriculture.

1 Revealing Botany in North America - No Lists or Herbals for The Native Americans


 Before The Europeans' Age of Exploration & Economic Exploitation

In The Beginning...

The modern history of systematic botany...in North America began when the...Europeans landed on these shores & began to collect objects of curiosity. It is imperative to use the term "modern," for long before colonization of the New World by Europeans, the Native Americans, who had arrived millennia earlier, had developed their own systems of classification, means of identification, & associated nomenclature.

 Unlike that of their European counterparts, the Indtgenous Peoples knowledge was transferred by the spoken rather than the printed word & was mostly lost as their civilizations fell to invaders. To a great degree, it was not until the twentieth century that Native Americans were recognized as knowledgeable about their plants. 

By then, European thought dominated botany, & the Native American's botanical understanding was passed on only in an occasional native name retained in a Latinized form.

James Edward Smith was born on December 2, 1759, in Norwich, England. to James Smith, a wealthy wool merchant, and his wife Frances Smith. His family was well-to-do, which afforded him opportunities for education and travel.

 fascination for natural history was evident from a young age, and he was encouraged by his parents to pursue those interests. He left  home to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he developed a passion for botany.

James Edward Smith became a prominent botanist and founder of the Linnean Society of London. His career was marked by his obsession to study and classify plants. He became instrumental in advancing botanical science in Britain and beyond.

He was particularly fascinated by plant taxonomy and the classification of species. His work was heavily influenced by the Linnaean system of classification.

Smith's botanical research was extensive, and he published numerous works throughout his career. He was so devoted to the Linnaean method of classification; that he purchased Carl Linnaeus's library and collections in 1784, which became the foundation for his own work. His publications include "Flora Britannica," "The English Flora," and "Icones Pictae Plantarum Rariorum."

Smith's contributions to botany were significant. His efforts helped to establish botany as a respected scientific discipline in Britain.

While Smith was primarily a botanist and academic, his work had a substantial impact on popular horticulture. His detailed descriptions and classifications of plants were valuable resources for both casual and dedicated gardeners and scientific horticulturists. His work influenced the cultivation and classification of plants in gardens and botanical institutions throughout Britain.

Pleasance was actively involved in Smith's work and helped manage his correspondence and publications. James Edward Smith passed away on March 17, 1828, in Norwich, England. His death marked the loss of a pioneering botanist, but his contributions to botany and natural history have left a lasting impact.

Al-Dinawri the Founder of Arabic Botany(828-896)

 

Ābu Hanīfah Āhmad ibn Dawūd Dīnawarī (828 – 896) was a polymath excelling as much in astronomy, agriculture, botany & metallurgy & as he did in geography, mathematics & history. He was born in Dinawar (in modern day Western Iran, halfway between Hamadan & Kermanshah). He studied astronomy, mathematics & mechanics in Isfahan & philology & poetry in Kufa & Basra. He died on July 24, 896 at Dinawar. His most renowned contribution is Book of Plants, for which he is considered the founder of Arabic botany.

Al-Dinawari is certainly one of the earliest Muslim botanists. His work, largely confined to the flora of Arabia, is perhaps the most comprehensive & methodical philological work on herbs. His treatise Kitab al-Nabat is characterized as “the most comprehensive & methodically most superior work of this philologically-orientated botany.” 

Al-Dinawari’s information is based on older written sources, on oral information from Bedouins, and, occasionally, on personal observation. His book Kitab al-nabat consists of two sections, one being an alphabetical inventory of plant names (and thus the first alphabetically-ordered specialized dictionary), the second section contains monographs on plants used for specific practical purposes: kindling; dyeing; bow-making. 

There is a chapter on mushrooms & similar plants (to the latter belong the parasitic broomrapes Balanophoraceae).  Al-Dinawari also devoted one chapter to the classification of plants (tajnis al-nabat) which he mentions in one of the volumes that have survived.  

In his exposition on the earth, Al-Dinawari describes a variety of soils, explaining which is good for planting, its properties & qualities, & also describes plant evolution from its birth to its death, including the phases of growth & production of flower & fruit. He also covers various crops, including cereals, vineyards & date palms. Relying on his predecessors, he also explains trees, mountains, plains, deserts, aromatic plants, woods, plants used as dyes, honey, bees, etc.
