1734 Benjamin Franklin's Notes on Plant Cures in Every Man His Own Doctor

In 1734 Franklin reprinted John Tennent’s Every Man his own Doctor, which had been published earlier that year in Williamsburg, Virginia & Annapolis, Maryland. Franklin may have concluded this “third edition” with the address to his readers, which is reprinted below; but no complete copy is known. In 1736, he reprinted Tennent’s pamphlet in a “fourth edition” with the address to his readers and a postscript based on Tennent’s Essay on Pleurisy, published at Williamsburg in 1736. Following is the Afterword printed in John Tennent's, Every Man his own Doctor: or, The Poor Planter’s Physician.... The Fourth Edition. Philadelphia: printed and Sold by B. Franklin, near the Market.

The Printer to the Reader wisheth Health.

This Book entituled, Every Man his own Doctor, was first printed in Virginia, for the Use of which Colony it was written by a Gentleman residing there. Great Numbers have been distributed among the People both in Virginia and Maryland, and ’tis generally allow’d that abundance of Good has been thereby done: And as some Parts of Pennsylvania, the Jerseys, and the Lower Counties on Delaware, are by the lowness and moistness of their Situation, subject to the same kind of Diseases, I have been advised to reprint this Book here, for the Use and Benefit of such People in these Countries, as live at too great a Distance from good Physicians. It is necessary, however, to give the Reader this one Caution, that the Ipecacuania or Indian Physick so frequently prescribed by the Author, is much weaker in Virginia, than that which grows in Pennsylvania; so that whereas he prescribes 80 Grains for a Vomiting Potion, and 70 for a Purge; 12 Grains of our Indian Physick, or Ipecacuania, will be sufficient for a Vomit, and 10 for a Purge: There is another Sort which comes to us from Europe, and is to be found in the Apothecaries Shops, of which 30 or 32 Grains is commonly given for a Vomit, and 27 Grains for a Purge, which will work most Constitutions sufficiently.

Postscript.
A Physician in Virginia has lately published an Essay on the Pleurisy, in which he discovers a Method of treating that fatal Distemper, that he says he always found to succeed. The principal Part of the Cure depends on the Use of a Simple that begins to be known in this Country by the Name of Rattle-Snake Root, being the same that the Indians use in curing the Bite of that venemous Reptile. The Method which the Author practices and recommends, is as follows.

“Let the Patient first have 10 Ounces of Blood taken from the Arm of the well Side, or Foot if both Sides are affected; and every 6 Hours 3 Spoonfuls of the following Tincture is to be given, the first Dose immediately after, and continued ’till the Symptoms abate.

“Take of the Rattle-Snake Root, 3 Ounces, wild Valerian Root, an Ounce and a Half, let them be well bruised in a Mortar, then mix them with a Quart of old Canary, and digest in a proper Vessel in a Sand-Heat for Six Hours, afterwards decant for Use.

“Let fifteen Drops of Balsam Capivi, and as many of Sal volatile Oleosum, be given in a little ordinary Drink, twice between each Dose of the Tincture, beginning with the first Dose two Hours after the Tincture; and give the second Dose two Hours after.

“Let the ordinary Drink be a Tea made of Marsh-mallow Roots, always given warm.

“If the Patient has been ill some Days before any thing administered, the Balsom is to be continued for some Days after a considerable Amendment.

“Bloodletting is to be repeated the second Day, and in the same Quantity as the first, if the Patient is not much better, or the same Day unless something better in 4 Hours: But such is the Efficacy of this Medicine, that there is seldom Occasion. The Symptoms generally abate considerably in 24 Hours, and the Recovery Certain.”

But because every one may not have Conveniency for preparing this Tincture, nor have the other Medicines mentioned at hand, and do not live within reach of a Physician, it is necessary to acquaint the Reader with what the Author adds further, viz.

“A Decoction of the Rattle-Snake Root alone in Spring Water, 3 Ounces to about one Quart; together with Pectoral Teas sweetened with Honey will prove effectual, without any thing else; if the Patient has been let Blood as soon as taken, and this Decoction immediately given afterwards.”

This is to be understood of the genuine Pleurisy or Peripneumony attended with a Fever.

As for the other Disease, which often personates a Pleurisy in these Parts, the Symptoms of which are, that the Patient is cold in a somniferous State, and sometimes convulsed.

In this Case the Author omits Bloodletting as pernicious; but says the Tincture aforesaid is as effectual here as in the genuine Pleurisy, only advises that the Rattle-Snake Root and Valerian be in equal Quantities.

We have not room to add more out of the above mentioned Essay; and indeed the greatest Part of it being taken up in abstracted Reasonings on the Texture of the Blood, and the Operations of different Medicines, &c. to make a larger Extract would be of little Use to the unlearned Reader, for whom this Book was originally intended; and ’tis supposed that in Cases of Danger, the Patient will always consult a skilful Physician where it can possibly be done.

But while we are solicitous about the Health of the Body, let us not forget, that there are also Diseases of the Mind, which concern us no less to be thoroughly cured of. The divine Assistance and Blessing on our Endeavours is absolutely necessary in both Cases; which we ought therefore piously and devoutly to request. And being healed, let us gratefully bless and praise that Great Physician, from whose Goodness flows every Virtue, and the Discovery of every useful Medicine.

1739 Michigan Fur Trader John Askin (1739-1815) owned a Gardening & Botany Book

John Askin (1739-1815), fur trader, merchant, and local official in what is now Michigan owned:

A complete body of planting & gardening Containing the natural history, culture, & management of deciduous & evergreen forest-trees; ... Also instructions for laying-out & disposing of pleasure & flower-gardens; ... To which is added, the manner of planting & cultivating fruit-gardens & orchards. The whole forming a complete history of timber-trees, ... by William Hanbury

Askin was born in Northern Ireland, Askin came to North America in 1758-9 as a merchant charged with supplying the British Army. He settled first at Detroit, then moved to Michilimackinac (now Mackinaw City, MI). Askin married in 1770 and had ten children with his wife (plus three with an unknown woman prior to his marriage).  In 1780 Askin and his family moved back to Detroit, where he held several positions in local government. 

When control of Detroit was turned over to the United States in 1796, Askin chose to remain a British citizen and served as justice of the peace for the Western District of Upper Canada. In 1802, Askin and his family removed to Sandwich, Ontario, where Askin established an estate known as Strabane and bought up significant amounts of property.  John Askin died at the age of 76 in 1815.  

Askin's library, one of the first known collections in Michigan, is documented in annual inventories of his estate dated 1776, 1777, 1778, 1779, 1787, and ~1808, plus an 1821 inventory of Askin's estate titled "Inventory of Property Real and Personal Belonging to the Estate of the Late John and Archange Askin, Sandwich."

As you are noted to be a Lover of Curiosities, I have inform’d you of these; & if you have any Inclination to purchase them, or see ’em, let me know your Pleasure by a Line directed for me at the Golden Fan in Little Britain, & I will wait upon you with them. SHans Sloane (1660–1753), secretary of the Royal Society, 1693–1712, succeeded Isaac Newton as its president, 1727; physician to Queen Anne & to George I; president of the Royal College of Physicians, 1719–35; founder of the Chelsea Physic Garden. His books, manuscripts, & natural history specimens, bequeathed to the nation, formed a part of the original collection of the British Museum. G. 3 Nearly 50 years later bf recorded this incident otherwise. Sloane, he wrote in his autobiography, heard of the purse, called on him, took him home to see “all his Curiosities, & persuaded me to let him add that [the purse] to the Number, for which he paid me handsomely.”

Richard Henry Lee was a planter & Virginia statesman, the originator of the resolution for independence in the Continental Congress & a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. The son of Virginia politician/planter Thomas Lee & Hannah Ludwell Lee.

Born at Stratford, Westmoreland County, Virginia, Lee was educated privately at Wakefield Academy in England. From 1758-1775 he served in the House of Burgesses, & sat in the Continental Congress from 1774-79, 1784-85, & 1787. He also sat in the Virginia legislature in 1777, 1780, & 1785. He sat in the Virginia constitutional ratification convention in 1788 (opposing ratification), & was elected to the first U.S. Senate, serving from 1789 until 1792. 

Lee had four surviving children with his first wife, Anne Aylett (1738-1768) & five children by his second wife, Anne Gaskins Pinckard. Lee died at his Westmoreland County plantation Chantilly in 1794.

William Byrd II (1674-1744) Like his father, Colonel William Byrd, Byrd was a wealthy Virginia planter on his inherited plantation Westover, on the James River in Charles City County, Virginia. He served as a member, and later president, of the Governor's Council, as did his father. His library was one of the finest of his time in America. He recorded his observations on natural history as well as life in colonial Virginia. William Byrd's Natural History of Virginia is available in a translation by Richard Croom Beatty and William J. Richard Cranch (1726 - 1811) owned an Herbal & a Botany Book



Richard Cranch (1726 - 1811) owned:

The herball or Generall historie of plantes by John Gerard, in 18C America.

A new treatise on British and foreign vegetables which are now constantly used in the practice of physick; ... Being an improvement upon the Materia medica of the celebrated Steph. Fran. Geoffroy, ... with complete indexes of the English and Latin names by Etienne-François Geoffroy.

Cranch was a Massachusetts watchmaker, legislator, local official. Born at Kingsbridge, Devonshire, Cranch arrived in Boston in November 1746 & established a shop as a card-maker. He taught himself Latin, Hebrew, & Greek. Cranch relocated to Braintree in 1750, & later to Weymouth, where he took up the business of watch repair. He married in 1762 Mary Smith, the sister of Abigail Smith (later the wife of John Adams).

By 1766 the Cranches had moved to Salem, but returned to Braintree in 1769. Cranch served 2 terms in the state House of Representatives (1779-1783) & a term in the State Senate (1785-1787), & held the office of Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Suffolk County from 1779 - 1793. Cranch was a delegate to the Massachusetts convention to ratify the federal constitution, & supported ratification.


He was a supporter of the Harvard library, & the college granted him an honorary M.A. degree in 1780, placing him with the class of 1744. He was a founding member of the Massachusetts Charitable Society, & the Massachusetts Society for Propagating the Gospel in North America (in its 1787 iteration). He sat as a fellow in the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.  He was a strong Federalist politically.  Richard Cranch & his wife died within hours of each other in 1811.

1722 Mark Catesby (1683-1749) in South Carolina, Florida, & the Bahamas

In February 1722, Mark Catesby, a 40-year old Englishman with an enigmatic past & an insatiable curiosity for the wondrous serendipity of nature, set sail from London on a 3-month voyage to South Carolina. His sojourn in the New World was taken under the auspices of a group of Fellows of London’s Royal Society. Catesby was to spend the next 4 years exploring the natural habitat of Carolina & the Bahamas, & the subsequent 20 years writing & illustrating his magnificent 2-volume Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands.

Coming at the golden dawn of modern natural science, Catesby’s achievements are numerous & interdisciplinary. As an explorer, he was the first to conduct a critical study of the lush & varied habitat of the southeast colonies of North America, particularly the environs of the Lowcountry & the Piedmont area. As a scientist, he was the first to empirically observe & recognize the natural & man-made dangers impacting species’ survival. As an artist, his meticulous paintings & etchings of birds, other animals including fish, & plants captured the diverse natural beauty of colonial America a century before Audubon.

The details of Mark Catesby’s early life are sketchy at best...He was born on 24 March 1683, probably in the village of Castle Hedingham in Essex...His father was mayor of the nearby town of Sudbury & that a distant cousin was one of the organizers of the infamous “Gunpowder Plot” to blow up the king & parliament in 1605. His writing makes it obvious he was well-educated. His uncle, Nicholas Jekyll, who lived in Castle Hedingham had contacts with local naturalists & evidently kept an interesting garden. We also know that Mark was acquainted with the work of the Reverend John Ray, the leading English naturalist of the late 17th century & co-author of an early classic study on birds...

His life comes into sharper focus in 1712, when he arrived at Williamsburg, Virginia, accompanying his married sister Elizabeth (Mrs William Cocke) & 2 of her children. It was during his seven-year stay in Virginia that Catesby “not being content with contemplating the Products of our own Country,  soon imbibed a passionate desire of viewing as well the Animal as Vegetable Productions in their Native Countries; which were Strangers to England.” It was also during this time that he began collecting botanical specimens, especially seeds, & sending them to friends in England & that he met William Byrd II, who was an amateur naturalist, a member of the colonial Council & a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1714, Catesby & others traveled “from the lower part of the James River in Virginia to that part of the Appalachian Mountains where the sources of that river rise…” In the same year, he sailed to Jamaica, where he gathered Jamaican plants to send to England.

By 1719, Catesby had returned to England, where influential members of the Royal Society, then chaired by Sir Isaac Newton, had learned of his work in the colonies. Led by William Sherard, “one of the most celebrated botanists of the age,” members began soliciting sponsors to finance Catesby for a botanical expedition to South Carolina. By 1722, Catesby was again crossing the Atlantic. This time his studies would reveal the natural marvels of what was still an exotic – & largely unexplored – continent & which would be chronicled in his monumental Natural History of Carolina, Florida & the Bahama Islands.

Catesby’s 4 years of travels throughout South Carolina, parts of Georgia, & the Bahamas took him to lush & mysterious places: swamps where coniferous trees lost their needles in winter; dense maritime forests of oaks that bore leaves year round; endless salt marshes where grasses drifted in the wind to the horizon; & bark huts pitched for him by his Native American helpers. Everywhere he saw & painted plants & animals unknown in his homeland: massive buffaloes, & frogs in exotic stripes of yellow & green; swallowtail butterflies & summer ducks who nested in trees; painted & indigo buntings, blue herons & bald eagles; magnificent broad-leaved magnolias, wild lilies, flowering laurels & climbing vines.

Catesby’s odyssey produced a treasure trove of insights & observations about the wilderness of North America. A number of his drawings depict species we will never see again — the Carolina Parakeet, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker & the Passenger Pigeon. He was very likely the first to recognize how natural & man-made destruction & depredation of a species’ habitat lead to extinction. He was the first to depict birds, in conjunction with environmentally relevant plants. Earlier naturalists such as John Jonston, who wrote a series of books on vertebrates including one on birds, depicted their subjects as dead or isolated figures crowded together on the page, with little or no background. And, Catesby was the first to observe that birds migrate, rather than hibernate in caves, hollow trees or at the bottom of ponds, as was commonly believed in his time.

After returning to England in 1726, Catesby spent the subsequent 2 decades years laboring over his Natural History, the first fully illustrated study of the natural history of North America & the most comprehensive to date. Working virtually alone, Catesby personally oversaw every aspect of the work’s production – even learning the difficult art of etching on copper plates, when Continental sources for this skill proved unavailable or too expensive. Published in 11 sections & featuring more than 220 hand-colored etchings, the Natural History remains Catesby’s singular achievement. To finance this arduous & expensive printing project, Catesby sought subscriptions, offering his book in sections of 20 plates to be published every 4 months. He personally presented the first section to Her Majesty Queen Caroline in May 1729, & later he dedicated the 1st volume of the Natural History to her.

Each of the 160 subscribed copies of the work was individually hand-colored so that no 2 were exactly alike. While many copies were lost, damaged or split apart for the beauty of the engravings, roughly 80 first edition copies of the Natural History still exist. They can be found, for example, at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, Middleton Place Plantation near Charleston, South Carolina, the Royal Society in London, & in several private collections.

For the 2 decades it took him to create his great book, Mark Catesby lived in London with his partner Elizabeth Rowland. They had 4 children born between April 1731 & December 1737. Elizabeth & Mark were married on 8 October 1747 in St George’s Chapel, Hyde Park Corner, London. Just over 2 years later, following a collapse, Mark Catesby died at his home on Old Street, London, on 23 December 1749; & he was buried in the churchyard of St Luke’s Church.

Witherspoon was a Scottish-American Presbyterian minister & president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). The only clergyman & college president to sign the Declaration of Independence.  

Born in Gifford, Scotland, Witherspoon was educated at the University of Edinburgh, taking a Masters of Arts degree in 1739. He was pastor at the Presbyterian churches of Beith (1745-1758) & Paisley (1758-1768), during which time he wrote several theological works.  

In 1768, Witherspoon accepted the invitation to become the 6th president of the College of New Jersey, where he taught the senior moral philosophy course & instituted several key curricular reforms.


Witherspoon was an early supporter of the American struggle against Britain, joining a local committee of correspondence in 1774. He was elected a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, serving there from June 1776 - November 1782.  Following the Revolution, Witherspoon took on the responsibility of rebuilding the damaged campus, served 2 terms in the state legislature, & supported ratification of the Constitution. He died in 1794 & is buried in the Princeton Cemetery.

Readings about 18C & 19C American Women Botanists & Plant Collectors

Before the middle of the 19C, American young women were being educated in botany by their families, in their schools, & through their own or borrowed textbooks. Margaret Coxe wrote in 1842, "Formerly, the study of Botany was almost exclusively confined to the medical profession, or to a limited number of philosophic minds, & accordingly the treatises on the subject were elaborate, & in many respects unsuitable to be placed in the hands of youth, and more especially of young females...But this delightful science has become at the present time a favorite with the young, refined, & delicate of our sex, & introductory publications on a plan, easy, practical & comprehensive, are now readily procurable by the ladies of our country who desire to be initiated into this branch of knowledge"

Hannah English Williams (d 1722) Botanist South Carolina

Hannah English Williams (d Dec. 16, 1722) is often described as the earliest woman botanist in America. She was the first female in the American British colonies to gather plant and animal specimens for scientific collections. 

Her work aided the cataloging of many of South Carolina’s natural resources and contributed to advancing botanical and zoological understanding in that colony in England. Little is known of Williams' origins. Her husband, Matthew English, by whom she had 2 children, arrived aboard the Carolina with the 1st European settlers in 1670. She may have followed shortly thereafter. Her birth date, birthplace, and parents’ names are unknown.

Two South Carolina wills mention Hannah English Williams' children. In a 1710 South Carolina Will, proved 26th October, 1711, William Williams of Carolina planter, and gives to his son-in-law Henroyda English, all of his estate, real and personal. His mother Hannah Williams, widow to William Williams, declares the above will to have been made with her consent. The 1694 South Carolina Will of Charles Clarke, of Berkley County, dated November 2, 1694, mentions Mrs. Mary Spragg, daughter of Mrs. Hannah Williams, to whom he leaves a house and lot, bounding on late belonging to Gov. Thomas Smith. Mentions also William Williams, gentleman, of Carolina, and leaves the remainder of his property to William Williams and Mrs. Mary Spragg.

After her husband's death, she married planter William Williams between 1692-4. Her 1,000-acre plantation was at Stony Point on the Ashley River. As the widow Hannah English, she was awarded a warrant of 500 acres near Stony Poynt in November 1692. In May 1695, as Mrs. Hannah English alias Williams, she was granted another warrant for 500 acres on land on the north side of Ashley River called Stony Poynt. This 1000 acres of land was a wealthy source of undiscovered wildlife. This land would have provided her with unlimited opportunities for finding native plants, butterflies, vipers, snakes, lizards, birds, insects, plants and shells.

As early as 1701, she began a regular correspondence with James Petiver, a London apothecary and Fellow of the Royal Society. Williams & Petiver corresponded from 1701 to 1713, & he listed those items he wished her to procure when she joined his network of collectors. Petiver encouraged her interest in natural history, declaring Williams the “discoverer” of unique butterflies & describing her as “my generous benefactress.” He instructed Williams how to preserve specimens for shipping, with “each stuck on a pin or in a little viall drowned in Rum or Brandy.” Petiver described Williams’s contributions in his published serial booklets entitled Musei Petiveriani Centuria Prima Rariora Naturae.A February 6, 1704, letter from Williams to Petiver accompanied a shipment of “Some of Our Vipers & Severall Sorts of Snakes Scorpions & Lizzards” in addition to shells, a bee nest, & a “few Other Insex.” She promised to send “some Mockin birds & Red birds” in the spring because, “If I should send you any Now the Could would Kill them.” She also enclosed a “Westo Kings Tobacco pipe & a Queens Petticoat made off Moss” & asked for newspapers & “medisons.” 

Williams’s son met Petiver in England to discuss collections his mother had been gathering, until she heard false reports of Petiver’s death. Petiver expressed his respect for Williams by naming some butterfly species for her. In 1767, Petiver’s Gazophylacium Naturae et Artis included illustrations of Williams’s orange girdled Carolina butterfly (also called the viceroy, which mimics monarch butterflies), Williams’s yellow tipt Carolina butterfly (popularly called dog’s head), & Williams’s selvedge-eyed Carolina butterfly (known as creole pearly eye).

Williams asked Petiver for medical advice and pharmaceuticals because “I am Very much Troubled with the splene.” Records indicate that Williams was buried on December 16, 1722, in St. Philip’s Churchyard, Charleston.

Sarah Willoughby was the wife of Virginia landowner and militia Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Willoughby (1632-1672).  The daughter of Richard Thompson, Sarah married prominent planter Thomas Willoughby on 18 November 1652. Willoughby owned significant amounts of land in Lower Norfolk County, VA.  Sarah and Thomas Willoughby had three children, of which only one, Thomas, survived. 

Sarah Willoughby's library was inventoried on 26 February 1673/4, and valued at £5.

Michael Wigglesworth (1631-1705) Harvard Physician & Minister owned an Herbal

Michael Wigglesworth (1631-1705) owned:

The English physician; or, An astrologo-physical discourse of the vulgar herbs of this nation by Nicholas Culpeper

Rev. Michael Wigglesworth was a Massachusetts divine, physician, & poet. Born in Yorkshire to a Puritan family, Wigglesworth came with his parents to America in 1638, settling first at Charlestown, MA, & then removing to New Haven, CT. Michael was educated by Ezekiel Cheever at New Haven, briefly, but was taken from school to assist his father, who had been injured. In 1644 he resumed his education, & entered Harvard in 1647. He graduated in 1651, & was quickly named a fellow of the college, in which capacity he served as a tutor.  Wigglesworth began medical training, then took up the ministry during his time as a Harvard tutor, & was called to be the teacher of the church at Malden in 1654. He was ordained somewhat later, around 1656. 

He was stricken by an unknown illness (perhaps a violent asthma) in the late 1650s which left him unable to preach, & turned to literary production. His The Day of Doom, a religious poem published in 1662, was a bestseller; more than 1,800 copies sold within a year.  In hopes to improve his health, Wigglesworth traveled to Bermuda in September 1663, remaining there until the following May (when, he says, he became "unable to bear the heat"). He returned to Malden, where he composed his second book of poems, published in 1670 as Meat out of the Eater.  Increase Mather attempted to persuade Wigglesworth to return to Harvard employment (probably the presidency) in 1684, but was rebuffed: "I cannot think my bodily strength competent enough to undertake or manage such a weighty work as you mention, if it were desired; nor have I reason to judge myself in any measure fit on other accounts."

Wigglesworth married first Mary Reyner, who died 21 December 1659, leaving a young daughter. Michael's second wife was Martha Mudge, just eighteen years old when he married her in 1679 (against the advice of Increase Mather). Martha died in 1690, leaving a son & five daughters. He married a third time in 1691, to Sybil (Sparhawk) Avery, the widow of Dr. Thomas Avery of Dedham, with whom he had one son.

By 1686, Wigglesworth's health appears to have improved; he preached the annual election sermon that year, & the Artillery Company sermon in 1696. Less than two years thereafter his health again declined, & he never fully recovered, dying in June 1705. Cotton Mather preached a eulogy at Malden.  A catalog of Wigglesworth's library was taken on 22 October 1705 by Jonathan Pierpont & James Augier. Botanies & Herbals owned in Early America - Dr. Gershom Bulkeley (1636/7- 1713)

In Connecticut, Gershom Bulkeley (1636/7 - 1713) owned The herball or, Generall historie of plantes by John Gerard. 

Bulkeley was a minister, doctor, & alchemist of Wethersfield & Glastonbury, Connecticut. A graduate of Harvard College (Class of 1655), Bulkeley was minister at New London, CT from 1661 until 1666 & then at Wethersfield until 1677. Bulkeley became a chaplain & surgeon to Connecticut troops during King Philip's War, during which service he was wounded in the thigh. 

Following his departure from the ministry, Bulkeley moved to Glastonbury, where he engaged in medical practice.  Bulkeley married Sarah Chauncy, daughter of the minister Charles Chauncy. (Bulkeley's library is listed in his will, dated 26 May 1712 and transcribed in A Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records, Vol. II, pp. 165-167.)

Rev. Gershom Bulkley, son of Rev. Peter Bulkley of Concord, Massachusetts, was born on December 26, 1635.  His parents were the Rev. Peter Bulkley, who was born January 31, 1582/3, at Odell Co., Bedford, England, & his second wife, Grace Chetwood, who was born about 1602 & died April 21, 1669 at New London, Connecticut.  His parents parents came to New England in 1635, after his father, a preacher for twenty years, had been 'silenced' for his non-conformity to the English Church. 

Rev. Gershom Bulkeley is named in his father's will dated April 14, 1658 & proved June 20,1659. In a codicil dated February 26, 1658, regarding the list of books appended to the will of Rev. Peter Bulkeley, part of the books were to go to son Edward & the other part to his son Gershom.

1661: Minister at New London, Connecticut, as their second minister. 
16664/5: February 25: At a town meeting, it was discussed whether to allow Mr. Bulkeley the 'liberty of his conscience' without compelling him or enforcing him in his office, 'according to the laws of the Commonwealth.' 
1665: June 10: Knowing of Rev. Bulkeley's intent to leave New London, the town asked him to stay, until they were able to secure a successor to his ministry. 
1667-1677: Minister at Wethersfield, Connecticut. 
1675: Appointed by the General Court as surgeon for the army raised against the Indians. 
1676: Surgeon, King Philip's War. 
1677: Dismissed as pastor at Wethersfield, on his own request citing 'weakness in his voice',  he devoted himself to practice in medicine & surgery, which he continued over thirty years. 
1677: He removed to his daughter Dorothy's house, on the opposite side of the river, later becoming the town of Glastonbury. As he took his black maid with him, he thus became the first 'slave owner' in that town. 
1679: May: Deputy for Wethersfield. 
1684: He sued his neighbor John Hollister over a boundary dispute, which he won, but which led to the resurvey of all the Glastonbury lots. 
1686: October: Licensed as a physician in Connecticut. 
1687: Justice under Governor Andros. 
1689: He published a pamphlet on the affairs of Connecticut at Philadelphia, sent to England, but no copy of it is known to exist in this country. 
1689: He also wrote a work with the title “Will and Doom, or the Miseries of Connecticut,”  by & under a usurped & arbitrary power, being a narrative of the first erection & exercise but especially of the late changes & administration of government in their Majesties Colony of New England in America, demonstrating the he was a Loyalist to the Crown of England
1696: He wrote a letter disputing the witchcraft charges against Mercy (holbridge) Desborough, & detailing his disputes with the testimonies of the witnesses in her case.
He was master of several languages among which may be reckoned the Greek Latin & Dutch. He was famous as a surgeon, preeminent as a chemist, & highly respected as a magistrate. 

Military Service
After being installed at Wethersfield, he was appointed by the General Court in 1675, surgeon to the army that had been raised against the Indians in King Philip's War.
He was also placed on the Council of War. 
In 1675, while on an expedition the party to which he was attached was attacked by Indians near Wachusett Hill in Massachusetts & he was wounded in the thigh.

Gershom married Sarah Chauncey on October 6, 1659 at Concord, Massachusetts .  Sarah was born in Ware, England June 13, 1631, daughter of Charles Chauncy, President at Harvard College. His wife Sarah died June 3, 1699 & was buried the next day. He died at Glastenbury, Connecticut on December 2, 1713.  The will of Gershom Bulkeley is dated May 26, 1712, & in it he takes note of the grievous illness which he suffered for the last 20 years of his life. Gershom died at Glastonbury, Connecticut at the home of his daughter Dorothy (Bulkeley) Treat, 2 Dec. 1713, ae 77 yrs 11 mos. 

They are buried at Wethersfield Village Cemetery, Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut. Inscription: "Rev. & Hon. Gershom Bulkley died Dec. 2nd 1713, aged 77. He was honorable in his descent. Of rare abilities, excellent in learning, master of many languages, exquisite in his skill in divinity, physic & law & a most exemplary & Christian life. In certam spem beatae resurrectionis repositus."

1698 Wm Vernon & David Krieg collect plants in Maryland

1698 William Vernon (c. 1666-1711) & David Krieg, (1667-1713) & the incredible role of the Anglican Church & the Temple Coffee-House Botany Club

William Vernon (c. 1666-1711) was a British botanist  at Cambridge University, who collected in Maryland in 1698. Vernon hailed from Hertford, where he received his early education before entering Peterhouse College, Cambridge in 1685. 
John Ray (1628-1705) one of the earliest of the English parson-naturalists.
At that time he was befriended by John Ray (1628-1705)  (compiler of Historia Plantarum: Species Hactenus Editas (1686–1704) - a catalog of plant taxonomy) & graduated with a BA in 1689.

After being named a fellow of the college in 1692, William Vernon took a leave of 4 years & visited the British American colonies in early 1698. The graduate of Cambridge University, Vernon was sent to Maryland especially for collecting specimens at the initiative of the Royal Society & the Temple Coffee-House Botany Club, & primarily the initiative of Sir Hans Sloane, (1660-1753), an Irish physician, naturalist & collector. 

Demand among the researchers & collectors of London’s Botany Club for specimens from temperate North America was intense, especially between Botanist James Petiver's (1665-1718), a London apothecary & Fellow of the Royal Society, & Sloane.

He traveled to the British American colony of Maryland at the same time as the German physician David Krieg, (1667-1713), & they collected plants, animals, fossils & shells in Maryland, although their movements remained separate. He returned in the winter of the same year.   
Botanist James Petiver (1665-1718)

Botanist James Petiver (1665-1718), was a London apothecary & Fellow of the Royal Society.  His tenant David Krieg appeared to be an ideal collector of specimens for Petiver with his excellent knowledge of nature & skill in drawing. Krieg, a German physician & botanist, was a native of Schwarzenberg in Saxony & studied at the University of Leipzig (1691-1694). He moved to London in 1696. Staying with the apothecary & botanist James Petiver, Krieg joined members of the Temple Coffee House Botany Club & visited Oxford, Cambridge & Essex where he met with John Ray. 

Petiver was born in Hillmorton, Warwickshire, where his father was a haberdasher, he studied at Rugby Free School & became an apprentice to an apothecary in London, supplying medicine to St. Bartholomew's Hospital. Petiver visited the Netherlands in 1711, to study with Dutch scholars. Petiver received many specimens from correspondents in the American & British colonies. After his death, his collections were purchased by Sir Hans Sloane for £4000, & some of it is now in the Natural History Museum in London.

When William Vernon (c. 1666-1711) was sent by the Royal Society & the Temple Coffee-House Botany Club to America to collect specimens, David Krieg also went to America at Petiver’s initiative in order to supplement Petiver’s natural history collections & if possible also the collections of other club members. The pair of collectors traveled separately, but under the patronage of Petiver & Sloane & it is reported that there was a healthy rivalry between them.  

Krieg sailed to America on the ship John & Thomas in the winter of 1697/98, earning his fare as the ship's doctor. The ship arrived at the mouth of the Virginia River at the end of March. At first, Krieg collected specimens in the region of the Choptank River for at least the first 6 weeks.  Krieg covered his living costs while there by treating planters as a doctor, receiving remuneration in tobacco. On a number of occasions, he also served as an expert in forensic pathology.

William Vernon arrived a week or two after Krieg. Both collected plants & insects in Maryland, particularly butterflies, birds & shellfish, for almost 5 months until the end of August or the beginning of September. Apparently a competitive rivalry prevailed between the two naturalists.  William Vernon had been sent especially to collect specimens of natural history for a period of several years but in the summer of 1698, he found out that his patron – the governor of Maryland – was to be transferred to the post of governor of Virginia, & Vernon decided to return to England in the autumn of that same year.  

David Krieg had planned on staying in Maryland for only one growing season.  He set about intensively collecting specimens immediately upon his arrival. Krieg was able to set sail in September, arriving in London in November. The result was recognition by the members of the Botany Club. The spring plants that he had collected were especially valued.  Krieg spent the winter of 1698/99 in London. On 11 January 1699, Krieg was elected as a Royal Society fellow upon the recommendation of both Sloane & Petiver. In the meantime, the specimins that had been collected in Maryland were distributed to the collectors who had ordered them at a session of the Temple Coffee-House Botany Club. Most of what Krieg had collected went to Petiver.

Many of Vernon's specimens were distributed among the clergy, including to Archbishop Thomas Tenison (1636–1715) & Bishop Henry Compton (1632-1713)  as well as Sir Hans Sloane. Sloane traveled to the Caribbean in 1687, documenting his travels & findings with extensive writing years later. Sloane was ended his collecting by bequeathing 71,000 items to the British nation, providing the foundation of the British Museum, the British Library & the Natural History Museum, London.

Thomas Tenison (1636–1715), archbishop of Canterbury, was born in Cambridgeshire, to John Tenison (1599–1671), curate of the parish there, & Mercy, daughter of Thomas Dowsing. Tenison had been educated at Norwich School, & in April 1653, he had entered Corpus Christi College, Cambridge graduating BA in 1657. Tenison received his MA in 1660 (at Oxford in June 1664), & proceeded to earn his BD in 1667 & DD in 1680.  Amidst all of the political tensions of his tenure, he made time to cultivate a deep interest in the church's mission overseas, & in promoting the need for oversight by bishops in the American colonies. 

Tenison encouraged Thomas Bray in founding the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (1701).  The society initially aimed to win American colonists back to the church, & only then to convert native Americans. Tenison was often directly involved in its activities. When 4 Iroquois native American princes went to London in April 1710, he presided over a special committee concerning them. 

Though it was the bishop of London who officially licensed missionaries Tenison, even as late as 1710, insisted on vetting their credentials himself & meeting them personally before their departure. He encouraged missionaries to send him reports, including natural history, from America. 

He was elected vice-chancellor of William & Mary College, Virginia.  His friend John Evelyn, (1620-1706), English writer & gardener wrote that he had not met "a man of a more universal & generous spirit, with so much modesty, prudence & piety." Meticulous both academically & administratively Tenison was a bibliophile, he opened libraries & founded schools, 3 of which, in Kennsington, Croydon, & Lambeth, still bear his name.

Bishop Henry Compton, was another clergy with whom Vernon established a correspondence.  As bishop of London, Compton encouraged the newly founded Society for the Propagation of the Gospel & missionary work in America.  Compton was celebrated for his flower-filled garden at Fulham Palace. There were few botanical gardens in London at this time. 

A serious student of botany, Bishop Compton was keen to import rare species.  As Bishop of London, Compton was responsible for the Church of England overseas, including colonies in the Americas. He arranged for ministers to be sent to the American colonies as supply priests or missionaries who might send back American plant seeds & specimens which Compton would then attempt to grow at Fulham Palace. The fame of the Bishop's garden spread & visitors (including John Evelyn in 1681) came to Fulham 

Palace to inspect the trees, & over a thousand "exotics" were grown in stove-houses. Compton also received seeds from other parts of the world & was part of a group of botanical enthusiasts who met at the Temple Coffee house to exchange information & seeds. One of Compton’s Fulham Palace gardeners was George London (c1640–1714) who became a nurseryman & garden designer & went on to found the nursery of London & Wise at Brompton.

William Vernon's & David Krieg's specimens were sent from Sloane to John Ray who struggled to identify many of them & sorted them by taxa, regardless of collector, so that now it is difficult to tell which was collected by which. They were, however, of some use to Ray in the final volume of his Historia Plantarum (1704).

On his return the Royal Society awarded Vernon 20 pounds to collect in the Canary Islands in early 1699, but poor Vernon missed the ship & with another not due until the end of the year, he settled for collecting in Kent. A member of the botanical club which met at the Temple Coffee House in London at the turn of the century, little is known of his activities after he returned to Cambridge in 1702. He did continue to collect plants in the Cambridge area & began to specialize in the mosses, assisting Ray with the cryptogamic sections of his Historia Plantarum (1686-1704).

1672 Wm Hughes writes The American Physician on the Medicinal Virtues of N. American Plants

This is one of the earliest works in English on the medicinal virtues of North American tropical plants.  William Hughes wrote "The American Physitian; or, a Treatise of the Roots, Plants, Trees, Shrubs, Fruit, Herbs &c. growing in the English Plantations in America. Describing the Place, Time, Names, Kindes, Temperature, Vertues & Uses of them, either for Diet, Physick, &c. Whereunto is added a Discourse of the Cacao-Nut-Tree, & the use of its Fruit; with all the ways of making of Chocolate. The like never extant before." It was published in London, by J.C. for W. Crook, 1672.

This book is "Based on first-hand observations made in the West Indies. Evidence suggests that Hughes began his career in 1651 with a privateering voyage to the West Indies, during which he traveled to Barbados, St. Kitts, Cuba, Jamaica & mainland Florida. He appears to have spent a good deal of time visiting British plantations on Jamaica & Barbados, where he observed & made descriptions of a large number of New World tropical plants including potatoes, yams, maize (‘the wheat of America’), bananas, avocadoes (‘Spanish pears’), chili peppers, watermelons, sugarcane, guavas, prickly pears, coconuts & manioc. Hughes’s work ‘contributed greatly to the spread of the American indigenous use of plants either for Meat or Medicine." – Wilson & Hurst, Chocolate as Medicine [2012] p. 55.”  The last third of Hughes’s book is devoted to the medicinal properties of chocolate, which he called the “American nectar.”

While little is known about Hughes (active 1665-83), he did leave evidence in his books, that he had worked at one time at Radley, in Warwickshire, & that he had traveled throughout England & to the vineyards in Europe. This book was written during his time in the West Indies. Hughes also wrote "The Compleat Vineyard," 1670 and "The Flower-garden," 1672.

1679 John Banister (c1650–1692) Virginia Naturalist & Missionary catalogs American Plants

John Banister (c1650–1692) was a naturalist in the Virginia colony while serving as a missionary chaplain, who probably became interested in North American plants while studying at Oxford.  Banister was born about 1650, to John Banister & his wife in Gloucestershire, England.  In 1667, he matriculated at Magdalen College, University of Oxford. While Banister was an undergraduate, Dr. Robert Morison (1620-1683) became Oxford's 1st professor of botany. Banister may have attended his lectures in the Oxford Physick Garden, where he actually could see & study American plants grown from seed in the Oxford Physic Garden by Morison.

Bannister was sent to North America by the garden-loving Bishop of London Henry Compton (1632-1713), with whom he soon established a correspondence.  As bishop of London, Compton encouraged the newly founded Society for the Propagation of the Gospel & missionary work in America.  Compton was celebrated for his flower-filled garden at Fulham Palace, where Banister's Virginia trees flourished in the gardens of Fulham Palace.

There were few botanical gardens in London at this time. He arranged for Reverand Banister, himself an able botanist, to be sent to Virginia as a missionary in 1678, & to send back seeds & cuttings, which Compton then grew at Fulham Palace. Consignments were sent in 1683 & 1688.  Notable plants he collected & sent to his bishop, Henry Compton, in England included balsam fir (Abies balsamea), box elder (Acer negundo), honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), liquidambar (Liquidambar styraciflua), scarlet oak (Quercus coccinea), & Sweetbay magnolia (Magnolia virginiana).  The 1st magnolia in Europe was grown at Fulham Palace, Magnolia virginiana, & other species were planted such as the Cork oak, Quercus suber, the Black walnut, Juglans nigra, & maples, some of which are still represented in the grounds.  The fame of the Bishop's garden spread & visitors (including John Evelyn in 1681) came to Fulham Palace to inspect the trees, & over a thousand "exotics" were grown in stove-houses. Banister was 1st in Barbados & Grenada & then by April 1679 in Virginia, where, while serving a rector of the parish of Bristol Parish in Charles City.  He also became one of Bishop Compton's most energetic plant collectors. Exploring to the Virginia foothills, Banister collected plant specimens to send back to England. His primary focus was botany, but he also studied insects & molluscs.

In 1688, Banister married Martha Batte, daughter of Thomas & Mary (Randolph) Batte.. They had one son. Banister was among the clergymen who attended the July 1690, meeting in Jamestown to make plans for the College of William & Mary.  Banister purchased 1,735 acres on the Appomattox River in 1689/90.   Banister became friends with neighbor William Byrd of Westover (c1652–1704), an influential Virginia planter with botanical connections in London, who was engaged in trading with Indians. Banister accompanied Byrd on several trading expeditions as far as the foothills of the mountains.

On May 16, 1692, Jacob Colson, an employee of William Byrd who accompanied the expedition, accidentally killed John Banister. Byrd became the guardian of Banister's namesake son & obtained his library of 80+ volumes, some of which are now in Philadelphia libraries. Lieutenant Governor Francis Nicholson directed that Banister's collections of specimens & drawings be assembled & his catalogs copied, & the originals were sent to Bishop Compton in London.  Martha Batte Banister

After Banister's death his letters, collections, & drawings, most of which found their way to England, made major contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge.  Banister's notes were used by European naturalists & historians, often without attribution, in their published works on North America. Other naturalists named plants for Banister, & William Houstoun (c1695-1733)  gave the name Banisteria to a class of plants. In his Species Plantanum (1753), Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) cited specimens that Banister had collected & described.  He sent botanical drawings & specimens to botanist James Petiver (1665-1718), a London apothecary and Fellow of the Royal Society.  Robert Beverley's (1673-1722) History and Present State of Virginia (London, 1705) directly reproduced extensive passages on natural history & Indians from manuscripts of Banister, as did John Oldmixon (1673-1742) in The British Empire in America (1708).

Banister had sent many seeds & plants back to Bishop Compton; John Ray (1628-1705) published Banister's list of plants & added several new species to his own lists in Historia Plantarum: Species Hactenus Editas (1686–1704).  Martin Lister (1602-1670) published extracts of Banister letters in the Royal Society's Philosophical Transactions in 1693.

Banister's original catalog is now in the British Library, & many of his specimens are in the British Library & in the Sherardian Herbarium at Oxford University. Noted naturalists such as Johann Jacob Dillenius (1684-1747), Martin Lister, James Petiver, & Leonard Plukenet (1641–1706) made extensive use of Banister's collections, some even crediting him with his discoveries. Petiver employed Banister's notes on fungi in editions of his Gazophylacii Naturae & Artis (1702–1709). Petiver & AndrĂ© Michaux (1746-1802)  named plants for Banister; & William Houstoun gave the name Banisteria to a whole class of tropical & subtropical viny plants, one of which Banister had described as the "Wilde Hop-seed in Barbadoes."  When Carolus Linnaeus visited England in 1736, he studied the collections of plants at the Oxford & Chelsea Physick Gardens, both of which contained many of Banister's specimens. In preparing the 1753 edition of his Species Plantarum, Linnaeus cited the works of Morison, Plukenet, & Ray for many of the species & specimens that Banister actually had procured & described. Linnaeus recorded a list of Banisteria on the flyleaf of his own copy of Plukenet's Phytographia (1691–1705).

Banister sent numerous occasional papers to the Royal Society that were published in its Philosophical Transactions, providing "the first scientific account for Virginia in the field of descriptive botany, entomology, and malacology."  His letter describing Mutinus elegans, a stinkhorn, was probably the 1st report of a fungus from North America. Among them was "A Description of the Snakeroot, Pistolochia or Serpentaria Virginiania." He compiled a catalogue of American plants, the 1st flora of North America, published in the 2nd volume of John Ray's Historia Plantarum (London, 1688-1704), a catalog of plant taxonomy.
